Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have twenty-three students in my pre-kindergarten classroom. My classroom is housed in a Title I school in Greenville, South Carolina. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price meals. Many of my students speak English as a second language.
The students in my classroom have been identified by our school district as being "at-risk" and needing an additional year of educational programming.
It is my goal to make this additional year of programming one that not only provides the necessary academic needs but also provides the social and interpersonal skills found in play.
My Project
Have you ever seen a child that would rather play with the box, than the toy that came in said box? That is because children are naturally drawn to open ended materials where they can manipulate them on their own terms. Items such as sand can be adapted and manipulated in many ways, and we need these materials encourage creativity and imagination, develop more skill and competence, and encourage open ended learning.
We need sand in both our indoor and outdoor sand tables to promote growth and development for tiny minds and bodies.
My students will use the sand to practice skills such as scooping, pouring and building.
