Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Play with sand and water involves sensory experiences that universally appeal to preschool children.
My 20 special needs preschool children arrive at their neighborhood public school with a variety of needs, including speech delays, autism and mental retardation, and a variety of experiences.
A sand and water play area will be a great learning laboratory for all of them regardless of their past experiences.
My Project
My students need 2 sand and water tables and an activity guide to enhance their outdoor play area. Sand and water inspire children to work together to construct a sand village, wash a baby doll, or chase a giant bubble as it sails through the air. Preschool students develop fine motor skills and eye hand coordination working with props as they pour water through a funnel, sift sand through a sieve, and squeeze a blaster full of water. Equally as important, as preschool children perform experiments in the sand and water area, they routinely ask and answer questions.
While sand and water play can delight the senses of preschool students, it can also challenge children's minds and promote all areas of development.
The simple addition of a sand and water table to the play yard with provide endless hours of social, physical, cognitive and linguistic development.
