Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in a blue collar area of Northern California. 81% of our kids qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
I have a very enthusiastic bunch of kids who love music.
They are eager to learn. They stay after school and come in during lunchtime to practice and learn new instruments. We start band in 6th grade while surrounding school districts start in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.
Only one of my feeder elementary schools has general music so the majority of kids come to me with no musical background. My kids are at a disadvantage by starting behind their peers. They also don't have the same opportunities, like kids in surrounding school districts, to take private lessons. Being able to provide instruments and supplies to more students will help them catch up to their peers since they will have to compete with these kids for honor bands and scholarships.
My Project
Having a good set of bongos will help my students understand the correct way to play them. We have a very old pair that are not tunable which is not acceptable. They need to learn how to tune them. We also need to replace our cabasa because it disintegrated in my student's hand as he was trying to play it during our concert in October.
In addition to the percussion needs we are also in need of a synthetic bassoon reed so we can have as many students try out the bassoon.
Bassoon reeds are very expensive because they are hand made. Because of this, many of my students are hesitant to try the bassoon. With the synthetic reed we can have a bunch of kids try the bassoon without expense. The synthetic reeds are also not as fragile as a regular reed which can split, crack or chip.
Along those same lines we are also seeking funding for a harder set of timpani mallets. My students are learning to play the timpani and not every piece uses the same type of mallets. Just like a carpenter that has many different types of screw drivers for various jobs, our percussionists need different mallets for different types of music.
