My students are a diverse group of creative, curious, and passionate learners who, like most 8 year olds, are full of energy! They spend their school days learning in Spanish and amaze me every day with their desire to learn, explore, ask questions, and acquire a new language. One of the best things about teaching 2nd grade at my school, a 90/10 immersion program, is that mid-way through the year students also begin English instruction for the first time in an academic setting. It's truly amazing to see the growth and progress my students make in two languages throughout 2nd grade!
By making instructional decisions that put my students at the center of their learning in our classroom, they are empowered to pursue their interests and take ownership of the learning process.
Through best-practices including student choice, collaboration, culturally-responsive teaching, inquiry-based learning, reflective practices, and collaboration, I strive to create a learning community where students feel welcomed, engaged, and love to learn!
My Project
As a teacher, I seek to create an environment for my students to support their active minds and bodies. Last summer, thanks to the generosity of family and friends, I completed a DonorsChoose project that provided flexible seating options for my 2nd grade class. It has been so much fun implementing flexible seating--bean bags, wobble chairs, cushions, portable work spaces, and sit spots-- in my classroom this year.
Currently, we have enough resources for approximately half of my class of 25 students to use our “asientos flexibles” at a time.
Taking turns, we use them throughout the day and I find my students begging to use them! From a teacher’s perspective, my students are more engaged, less restless, and demonstrate increased focus using flexible seating.
When students have choice in their learning, they learn better, so with the remaining funds from my first project I plan to purchase more flexible seating options so that more students can access them at once. Students voted on their preferences (an authentic lesson on the voting process!), and we are looking forward to having more beanbag chairs and stability balls available to us!
