Help me give my students a 75 gallon fish tank, a chiller for the fish tank, stand to hold the 600lb tank, and all other necessary items to start Salmon in the Classroom!
This project will help all of our students that range from below to above grade level. In order to make sure each child is getting what they need, we do a lot of individualized centers. My biggest challenge, when it comes to teaching these students, is having enough materials. My kids are hungry to learn!
We have many students that are from low-income rural families.
My students come from a small, farm town. My students are very curious about the world. Due to their income and home responsibilities, many of them have never left the area. They are all very eager to learn and read! Our school is very bright and encouraging. For many students, this is the highlight of their day. All of my students are also being given an opportunity to develop their own skills and talents in a way and at the pace that is best for them, through differentiated instruction.
My Project
Michigan DNR has a project called Salmon in the Classroom. Students raise salmon from eggs to smolt--then release them in a Michigan river. Salmon in the Classroom is not just another science activity, but a very interactive, participatory program in which students raise the resource and ultimately are responsible for its survival and release. The number one reason that the DNR supports this living resource program is to build a connection between students and the natural resources found around them.
One of the many reasons for starting this program is the seemingly limitless subject matter that teachers can integrate into their lesson plans through raising salmon.
The program can easily cover standards in mathematics, social studies, language and arts, history and, of course, science. Salmon are a great resource for teaching across the curriculum. Salmon in the Classroom will be used to teach our kindergartners all the way through our 6th graders so many different educational standards.
Since this is our first year starting this program we need all equipment from the 75 gallon tank, a stand to hold this very heavy 600 pound tank, Arcitica chiller, all the way down to the smaller items like water quality strips and thermometer. Students will really enjoy this hands on way of learning!
