Science is drama, and with the return of U.S. space vehicles to flight (Orion launches Dec. 4, 2014), students need excellent reading materials to support STEM learning.
A reading program through the Sally Ride Academy using multimedia e-books customized to meet various reading levels, now that's what we need!
I teach in a New York City public school that is in one of the most diverse areas in the nation, the borough of Queens. Our international school community brings a global perspective to the classroom and that comes with tremendous expectations to achieve for many who are first generation Americans. What better way to inspire students than through the incredible United States space program? Our families would be so excited to learn that their children are using e-books on a whole range of science content areas and the Sally Ride Academy has a program that is a perfect fit for us. The name and the resources tell the story.
My Project
The Sally Ride Academy offers a literacy program in support of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) that has all the pieces for exciting reading, activities, project-based learning, and access from anywhere. I am requesting a one year site license for students to access the e-books, activities, videos, self and teacher assessments, and related research for all science. The comprehensive nature of this program and how it addresses (and exceeds) state and Common Core requirements make it a one stop shop program that is streamlined for motivating students to read. There are numerous strands such as space science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, and more so that students can benefit from the differentiated learning options the program offers. The freedom to choose, learn and still be held accountable are powerful inducements to bring such a program into the classroom.
I have been looking for a science literacy program that would address the myriad of needs of both students, teachers, and administration.
I am so excited that the Sally Ride Academy has come up with engaging resources for the students. They will simply not be able to tear themselves away from the reading, exciting videos, and projects. The material is just too compelling. The power of the e-book format will allow the students to continue reading at home.
