Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative and loving. They have joyous personalities and show up each day to learn. The majority of the students are on the autistic spectrum and spend 4-5 class periods in one of two special education classrooms. In these classrooms, the students receive individualized attention from the three adults (one teacher and two aides) present. Here, they can be themselves, laugh with peers who understand their humor, and share their interests.
Our school is small which allows the students in this classroom to be part of a larger, supportive community.
The students participate in grade level activities such as year-long projects, field trips, and internships. While our school offers unique opportunities, it still faces challenges. We are a Title I school in an urban area and our school district is currently experiencing a fiscal crisis. In the middle of this unrest, our staff works hard to create a supportive and safe environment for our students.
My Project
This project will help cover the cost of BART and bus tickets so my students can travel from Oakland to the San Francisco Marina so they can go sailing on the Bay! From our school campus, we are able to walk to the BART station from which we will travel to the Embarcadero station in San Francisco. From there, we will catch a bus that takes us to the San Francisco Marina.
We have been offered the opportunity of a lifetime: The chance to take students on a sailing boat at no cost to us, but we need help getting to the marina.
Even though we live in the wonderful Bay Area, none of my students have ever had the opportunity to ride on a sailboat and explore the bay from a different perspective.
There is so much learning that can happen outside of the classroom. Students get to participate in hands-on learning that will help them build life skills. Plus, it is a great break from the stereotypical book learning. Guaranteed, this is a field trip that they will remember!
