My class is designed to give students an understanding of the natural resources in Michigan. What better way to learn about those resources than getting out into the greatest resources we have the Great Lakes. Students will learn about water quality, wildlife and careers while sailing.
My students are from a small rural farming community in Michigan.
They range from 10-12th graders. Many of my students have not traveled outside of our county let alone to the lake shore. This group of students learns best from hands-on experiences that it is why I believe this trip will be such a valuable experience. Our school district K-12 is under 900 total students. We try to encourage all students to be life long learners. That is why part of this trip will be a college tour to a school many of our students might never consider.
My Project
My students will spend the course of the semester learning about the eight natural resources. This field trip will allow them to take their course work and apply it to a real life application. They will also learn a new skill when they learn how to sail. They will learn from scientists about how to take water quality samples from deep bodies of water that we do not have access to at the school. They will have the opportunity to see wildlife in its natural environment and look at the impact of human populations on these species. Students will also tour a new agriculture and natural resource program at a university to learn about green technologies and their impact. They will also get to learn about worm composting as well.
Studies show that the way to make a lasting impact on students is to get them out of the classroom and get them involved in the subject.
Many peoples best memories are being outdoors, I want to give my students an experience that they will never forget. I hope that my course helps them to better appreciate the natural resources of our state and nation. Please help us set sail.
