My students need safety goggles and lab aprons to complete an amazing series of biotechnology labs: a murder mystery lab and a genetic transformation lab.
Humans are constantly experiencing food shortages, disease, and crime. My students will learn to alleviate our world's issues by exploring the ethics and benefits of using biotechnology. Before we can conduct these labs to save the world, we need to ensure our safety with goggles and aprons.
My students are an eager and enthusiastic group of learners.
They are curious about the world around them and they yearn for authentic opportunities to explore and make discoveries about their world. Our school community is vibrant and supportive, but like many communities, they have been asked for a lot in these troubling economic times.
My Project
This equipment will allow me to conduct high school and college level labs at my middle school. My students deserve to be challenged with exciting labs that inspire them to pursue careers in science.
I applied for and received a separate grant for supplies to conduct three biotechnology labs in February, 2012. There is a murder mystery lab where students compare DNA samples using gel electrophoresis, a genetic transformation lab where students combine a green florescent protein gene into bacteria, and a natural products of plants lab, where we explore the value of biodiversity. I have the labs, but the grant did not cover the cost of safety equipment.
I currently share one set of safety equipment with eight other science teachers. This makes doing wet labs safely extremely challenging. Without more safety equipment, I will not be able to conduct the labs. This safety equipment will last for years to come and it will enable me to conduct hundreds of labs with students.
This safety equipment will ensure that my students develop safe practices early on.
Your contribution will allow them to make many discoveries that may inspire them to enter a career in science and solve our world's problems.
