Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science education is a major part of our sixth grade afternoon. We conduct various investigations and activities recommended by our curriculum and state standards. The students enjoy science and look forward to it everyday. The hands-on approach is truly engaging all of my students everyday. I'm teaching/facilitating science investigation in a way that enhances students learning potential. They are following the scientific method and procedures and understanding the importance of doing so for successful investigations. The students are the scientists in my classroom.
Our success would be greater with the ability to add the importance of safety in a more concrete way. I do stress safety in all procedures of our investigations but it would have an even greater impact if we had a science safety kit available for the students to use as they were conducting these activities. The students would be able to use and place importance on the use of a variety of safety equipment that we are currently lacking. Equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, aprons, and the like would greatly add to the experience of being a scientist and meet state standards of science safety at the same time.
I have thirty-two eager scientists in my room that would love to dig deeper into the area of science and with this safety equipment we can definitely include a wider range of activities that otherwise we would be forced to pass up due to safety concerns that can be eliminated with the proper equipment/protection.
I can not think of a better way to teach students than to give them the opportunity to collaborate in a safe learning environment that gives them the confidence to investigate and explore as real scientists do in the real world.
