I teach high school chemistry to juniors and seniors in a small but rapidly growing coastal community. Chemistry is a lab science with many hands-on lab experiences required for the students to master the concepts of chemical reactions.
My students really enjoy the active participation that labs allow. They are highly motivated to do well so that they can be prepared for college. However, a major priority in these labs is safety. We must have proper storage for our chemicals in order for the students to be safe. We already have an acid cabinet, but need another because of the variety of labs we perform. The different labs require different concentrations of acids, and these need to be properly stored so that they are readily accessible.
It takes valuable time away from the lab experiences if the students have to spend time preparing the acid solutions. If we have the proper storage, then these solutions can be prepared ahead of time and then are available as needed for the labs.
My students are motivated and eager to learn through the lab experiences. I want to be able to offer a wide variety of labs for them. Foremost, however, is their safety. You can make a difference in their safety and in their education by helping purchase an acid storage cabinet for them to use. It is important for chemistry class to offer lab experiences so that the students can see in action the chemistry they are studying. These labs will better prepare them for college chemistry as well. You can be a part of that preparation by your contribution.
