Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at our school are poor. Most of our students come home to empty houses due to the fact that their parents are working one or two jobs just to keep a roof over their kids' heads and food on the table. A vast majority of my students (90%) receive free and reduced-price lunch at school. For the most part, those free meals they get at school are the only meals that they will eat for that day.
Summer vacation for most of our students is not a vacation.
They spend this time either working alongside their parents in the fields or finding their own jobs in order to help bring in extra money for the family. Money at our school is very short, especially for sports equipment. Much of the equipment that we use for football is from the early 1990s when we only had one high school in our town. Since then we have grown to two high schools and the money has to be divided two ways which mean sports get the short end of the stick.
My Project
Our team is really in need of new protective equipment like head gears and hair caps. Wrestling season is one of the hardest times of the year, because it runs through 2 major holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A lot of families have to spend money on things on Christmas instead of things for sports like wrestling. Having a headgear and hair cap of their own that they do not have to share would help our team prevent injuries during practices and tournaments. Our team works hard year round to be the best they can be, and we want to show our students that all of their hard work was worth it. The new protective equipment will help our students get the confidence to go harder in practices and not worry about getting hurt. This project is important to me because I want to give the kids confidence and pride in themselves and their hard work. Giving them the tools and resources to help them succeed is my goal. Wrestling is not a very glamorous sport, especially in high school where sometimes kids tease them for being on the team. So anything we can do for the kids to make it more enjoyable is a top priority. Help us help them boost their confidence and pride in their school and sport. Thanks for your time.
