Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The softball season is long and the ladies are hard on their equipment which is pretty old to begin with. Having functioning equipment is crucial to safe play in Oklahoma summers. It's also about coming together as a team and having pride in what you do. They don't complain and "suck it up" sometimes better than the boys. This past season we had a player finish a game with a broken hand!
The size is classified as one of the largest of the state and continues to grow every year.
The population of the school is made up of 86% Hispanic, 16% black, and 6% white. The percentage of students on free or reduced price lunch is 94%. The yearbook students view it as almost a second family. They work well together and support each other through all of the ups and downs that come with living in this community.
My Project
The softball team may be made up of ladies, but they don't play like girls. These young ladies play hard and we are constantly mending cuts, scrapes, and wrapping legs, fingers, and arms.
We also need to repair and replace safety equipment and water supplies.
One of the water coolers does not have a spigot and one just needs replacing altogether. The catcher's gear is also needing replacement as well as getting an infielder face mask. Treating the cuts and scrapes and being able to tape the sprains is just smart preventative maintenance. Showing the student-athletes how to treat their injuries and taking care of their bodies is just as important as working out. There are also pieces to the first aid kit missing and you we didn't realize we needed them until trying to treat an injury.
