Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a Family and Consumer Science teacher and work in a urban school. Over 60 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In our hands on foods lab we give out students the opportunity to learn about the culinary arts, nutrition, as well as food safety and sanitation
Giving our student a chance to work in hands on food labs exposes them to many possible career options in the culinary industry, as well as careers in food sciences, and health and nutrition fields.
We stress food safety and sanitation in all of our foods classes. We require our students to wear aprons. We are in need of new aprons and new dish clothes and dish towels.
My Project
More than half of our students come from low-income homes. Having the opportunity to work in a professional lab setting gives them a chance to learn about health, nutrition, cooking skills, food safety and sanitation as well as group dynamics, time management and communication skills. Mastering these skill will build their confidence and help them achieve future career goals.
To maintain a professional and sanitary environment our students are required to wear aprons.
Students are also required to learn proper dish washing techniques. Our food lab kitchens accommodate 140 students per day. Having the appropriate supplies is essential to the success of our students. Please help us to acquire theses supplies.
