Help me give my students a storage shed to secure supplies and equipment for our outdoor experiences. We have supplies and equipment and need a place in the Ecology Lab to store them.
Most of my students come from low-income households with a mixture of background experiences. Our school is in a small to medium-sized city in a farming area. Most of my students have not experienced the natural environment outside of city parks and have not been very successful in science classes in the past.
My students need an understanding of the natural world to make educated decisions that they will face as adults in the world.
Many of my students have not been successful in traditional classes, but when they get outside they can make connections to bookwork by experiencing the concepts firsthand. My students have not made the connection between how their actions will affect their local environment and, in turn, how their local environment will affect the state, country and world.
My Project
In recent years, we have received donations that have helped my students experience the natural world by redeveloping our Ecology Lab. Our rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and gloves are some of the equipment that we have been given. These donations have come from a variety of sources both local and from a distance.
The students have learned about the damage caused by invasive species by seeing the barren ground under the invasive species and have experienced the change in the environment as they replant natives back into the ecosystem.
To continue these learning experiences for my students we need to maintain our donated equipment by improving our storage facilities by replacing our storage shed. The old shed was rotted and had to be removed. We salvaged what we could and re-purposed the materials in the Ecology Lab. The new shed will be of steel construction to last longer. The exterior will be decorated by art students in environmental murals. The goal is to give more students outside of the science classes experiences in the Ecology Lab.
