This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are amazing, bright, talented, and courageous young people who have experienced a great deal of trauma in their short lives. They are still experiencing the effects of being home for a year and kept isolated due to Covid. Many of my kids are struggling due to the effects of isolation and the anxiety that this pandemic has brought on. Despite all of this, my students are hopeful and incredibly resilient. This is a Title One school and many of my students come from homes in which they live with one parent or with an extended family member or maybe in foster care. However, they still come to school every day and I want to provide them with the safest, most welcoming environment possible.

I am a school counselor and I have the privilege of working with some of the most amazing students!

Many of my students have experienced a great deal of trauma in their short lives and many are living in single-parent homes, are homeless, or are in foster care. I would like the opportunity to provide them with a safe, comfortable space where they can open up to me and allow me to help them process the trauma they may have experienced in their lives so they can become better learners. I would love for them to recognize their full potential and to see they can do anything they want to do and they don't have to repeat the cycle of poverty that they might be living in. I want to use this furniture and these activities to create a space where they feel like they belong and are free to be themselves.
