My students attend first grade Literacy in a high poverty area that struggles with homelessness. They have lots of energy and are trying to adjust to a longer school day because Kindergarten was only half day. After lunch, they are crying and begging to leave. It's difficult getting them to focus but it is worth it when they do.
Many of my students have special needs and need a little TLC along with their ABCs and 123s!
It might take a little longer but I am determined to help my kids get there.
Every day many of my students come to school with their backpacks stuffed with things that aren't school related. I have seen stuffed animals, napkins, utensils, DVDs, photographs, and more. When I asked my students why they are bringing all of these things to school, I hear heartbreaking stories of moving from shelter to shelter, or car to shelter, and things getting left behind.
My students should not have to worry about losing all of the things they treasure.
I would like to help my students release their worry about their things going missing or getting left behind by getting a class set of seat sacks for the classroom. I want my students to be able to focus on what they are learning in class instead of trying not to get 'caught' with something that doesn't belong at school. The chair sacks will give my students the extra room they need at their seats to keep classroom materials and their treasure-stuffed backpacks can hang in our closet where my students know their things are safe but are not a distraction. These students already have a tough life and are behind on their literacy skills. Helping to alleviate some of their worry and anxiety can help them build confidence, feel safe, and focus on learning to read.
