My students need wobble stools to safely get some movement. They tend to tip back in regular stools, which is unsafe. My students would LOVE the ball seat with the option to lean back.
Being a teacher in a low income/poverty school, my students face many challenges outside of the classroom. Often times, students come to my classroom to have their basic needs met, and to feel safe and loved. I believe that second grade is a year of transition for little ones. The first half of the year they are still "little kids", and then transition into "big kids" towards the end of the year. Along with their maturity, the work load and intensity becomes increasingly difficult. In spite of the many challenges a lot of my students face, they work incredibly hard to meet very high standards, not only in academics, but in citizenship, integrity, and service.
To solve one obstacle for my children, I have created flexible seating to help my students comfortably and responsibly learn, whether that be wiggling, rocking, standing, or sitting on the floor.
Now that the first trimester is coming to an end, a few of my seating options either need to be replaced, or amended. I have seen a large increase in my students' ability to engage and stay on task during lessons and would like to extend more seating options in the classroom.
My Project
Since incorporating flexible seating in my classroom, I have seen an improvement in engagement and focus on tasks at hand. I am always looking for ways to improve the safety and comfort of the seating class. I notice that students frequently lean or tilt their stools or chairs back onto two legs, which is unsafe.
I believe the wobble stool will safely allow students to accomplish the leg pressure leaning stools back gives them.
My students really love sitting on the exercise balls, however, this ball chair will allow them to also be able to sit back against something.
