Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our science classroom, we like to get our hands dirty! One of the best way to learn about the world around us is to explore it through labs. In my new classroom, there are not enough goggles and no aprons for the students. Without safety equipment, labs are simply not possible. Help us learn!
My 7th and 8th grade science students are awesome!
They living in the inner city, which means they do not come from money or have many opportunities to explore the world around them. Our school is a K-8 school that gives the students as much as they can, but there is not much money to spread around for supplies.
My students love labs. It help solidify for them what they are learning. Simply, it makes learning fun because they are in control of it! There is so little in their lives that they have control over, so learning to make decisions that matter is vital to their future decision making.
My Project
Obviously, the goggles and aprons will be used for labs. My 8th graders will focus on Physics, with a little bit of chemistry mixed in at the end. My 7th graders will focus on Biology. All students will complete a science fair project. They will learn to work with each other in groups to accomplish tasks and overcome obstacles.
As I said before, labs are vital to creating a love of science and a strong interaction with the world around them.
Normally, my students would have almost no opportunity to do this outside of my classroom. Most have come with very little lab experience, yet they will go to high school, where experience is expected. By supporting my students, you are giving them the opportunity to be successful in a way that has not been given to them before!
