My students need a safe and comfortable learning environment, designed to support the type of 'learning through play' 3 to 5 year old children with special needs require.
We teach students age 3 to 5 who are eligible for special education services for the Springfield Public School District. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and demographics, and every one of them is unique in their educational needs. We provided services for students on the autism spectrum, students with social emotional needs, students with speech and language impairments, student's with fine and gross motor impairments, and others who qualify. We pride ourselves in addressing the individual needs of every student by meeting them where they are and maximizing their potential every day with engaging, relevant, and personalized experiences at school.
My Project
All students deserve a safe and comfortable learning environment. Often, classrooms inherit furniture and items which are not age appropriate.
As an educator of students who are 3 to 5 years old and have special needs, creating a space in which they can explore, play, and learn is essential.
In preschool, learning is attained through play! Playing often happens on the ground, on our tummies, or sprawled out. Having carpets on the cold tile floors in my classroom will give students a safe and comfortable place to play! Additionally, many of the students I work with have autism. They require visual cues in order to function with independence, and having separate carpets in each center helps them understand what space they should stay within during learning activities. Many of my students also struggle with gross motor (large muscle groups) deficits and have difficulty sitting 'criss cross', sitting upright in a chair without learning, or laying on their tummies. The chairs I picked out for alternative seating adapt to these difficulties and give students with deficit access to play areas they may not otherwise have.
