My name is Ashley Duffany and I'm an Early U.S. History teacher at an urban high school in Massachusetts. I teach mainly 9th graders and a majority are considered low-income and high needs. My school does not have a lot of resources to go around and every year I find myself spending well over $1000 to re-supply & decorate. This year I'd like to do a decent update to my classroom.
I teach a large special education and English Language Learner (ELL) population who need extra support.
Those ELL students have just arrived in the United States and are currently learning English while learning core content. Despite the lack of resources, I would like to expand the students' interest in history by providing more project opportunities within a safe, comfortable, and inclusive classroom. The past 2 years, only 50-60% of our freshmen were promoted to 10th grade due to our high absence & tardy numbers, along with the standard lack of engagement. With a more inviting & comfortable classroom environment, I think my students will enjoy coming to school more and become the successful young adults I know they truly are!
My Project
I'm requesting items for my 9th grade history classroom to make it a more inviting atmosphere for my students to learn. With many at-risk and majority low-income students in my high school, the need to get them to school on a daily basis is dire. I teach countless students with disabilities as well as immigrants who speak little to no English and have just arrived in the U.S. These students are especially at-risk for dropping out.
My goal is to allow my at-risk students to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom so they will want to attend school more regularly.
We have serious issues with attendance at my school due to home issues & general disinterest in school. I have done my best the past couple years trying to keep my room warm and inviting but I could use help bringing it to another level this year. I'm going to be hosting after school homework sessions and other extracurricular activities and with a nicer environment, I believe my students will truly come to school more and even want to stay afterwards to participate in enrichment opportunities. When the kids feel loved and cared for, they are much more productive and successful. My students deserve the world & so much more than I can give them. I hope you'll consider donating so I can continue to show my amazing students how cared for they are!
