Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
Next month our middle schoolers open up their season! We made it to CHAMPS and two weeks ago was our new coaches orientations. We are going through the first year growing pains, and its not just talent wise. We are missing a bunch of little things! For the first time we need chin straps for our helmets, and of course, we find this out 3 weeks before our first game/showcase. We were also told that we will be following PSAL rules, so what does that mean? 1st basemen, 3rd basemen, and pitchers MUST wear either a mouth guard or an infielders mask. These are basic equipment that we need to qualify to play. Next problem, our high school team is hogging up the catcher's mitts, so we need 2 more for my middle schoolers; and the one lefty glove that I had, guess who has it.... the high schoolers of course. We have one lefty in the 8th grade, but she currently has no glove. I don't like telling middle schoolers to go out and pay for equipment, since none work and rely solely on their parents. It would be great if we can get these supplies by other means. None of the girls have batting gloves, so I'm asking for a few that the girls can share. It is time to start dividing our equipment, our middle schoolers need their own gear.
