Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Band teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my band students work hard to become better musicians!
My students are energetic, eager, and love being a part of the band!
They love learning new music and music concepts and enjoy performing, not only inside our school at sporting events and pep rallies, but in competitions and concerts, as well.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". For example, it is typical for most band students to own their own instruments, but due to circumstances out of their control, this is a very difficult "typical" to accomplish for mine.
From the minute they walk in the door of my band room, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I try to give them the best musical experience and care in our time together.
My Project
I am so proud of my students and what we have accomplished this year. We resurrected our band program from scratch and have been steadily growing musicians, building instrument and supply inventory, and creating wonderful and meaningful memories the past 3 years with the help of DonorsChoose. As we grow in size and equipment, my students and I want to make sure that our valuable instruments are kept safe. We are requesting combination locks.
We are asking for help in acquiring combination locks so that we can continue to make sure our instruments remain safe and are available for students to use for many years to come.
Not only do we want to keep our school-owned instruments safe, but some of our students must keep their personal instruments at school as well and we want to make sure that there is a safe place for these as well. We fill combination locks are a small request that will have big gains for the future.
