My students need comfy Safe Place (rug) to feel safe and connected in their School Family so that they may learn.

Resilient. Even if they don't know the word before coming into my class, they are already resilient. These kids come from humble beginnings and are incredibly hard workers. I am just lucky enough to get to teach them each day. Fifth grade is such a fun age group because they have such great senses of humor. We find ways to laugh every single day. On those days when finding a reason to laugh or smile is difficult, our safe and caring community allows each student to tap back into and remember their resilience. By the end of the school year on our annual roller skating trip, students will get back up after falling, smile, and declare, "I am resilient!"
Conscious Discipline research shows that the human brain can only problem solve (which we ask students to do every single day) when it feels safe and connected. Children who do not feel safe and connected cannot learn, no matter how great the teacher. Taking time to establish routines in the classroom that give students skills and strategies to self-regulate is key. Rather than sending a misbehaving student away or humiliating them in front of the class, we need to stay composed and teach them skills. Having a comfy Safe Place (rug) in the classroom allows students a place to go when they need to calm down for any reason. This keeps them learning in the classroom while teaching them a vital life skill.
