My Project

For this project, I want to provide my students with a class set of the book, It's Her Story Sacajawea A Graphic Novel. We are very fortunate to have had the author of this book, It's Her Story Sacajawea A Graphic Novel, Randy'L He-Dow Teton, come and talk about her book to our school. She was also the model for the Sacajawea coin. We live next to a Native American Indian Reservation and we are so lucky to have an author of a book live in our little community and discuss her book.

First grade is a foundational year where students gain a love for learning and reading.

Our school district is one of the most diverse districts in our state. I have had the honor of teaching many Native American Indians. I want to provide students with this book and resource so they can see representations of themselves. This book will help open up meaningful discussions and conversations, where students will be able to identify and make connections with their peers or themselves and gain a greater appreciation for different cultures through literature. This will help them expand their awareness and knowledge of different cultures and appreciation of diversity.

Thank you so much for supporting our classroom in celebrating diverse cultures through literature and helping my kiddos embrace their love of reading in first grade.
