This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach PE to students in grades K-5 in a multicultural school that celebrates diversity. My students enjoy running, racing, biking, bowling, dancing, and tennis. They also enjoy reading, math, and playing foursquare and basketball at recess. We are currently at a temporary location while our school is being remodeled.
Every year, we have a family multi-cultural night where families bring food and wear traditional clothes to celebrate their culture.
It's a great time to celebrate diversity at our school.
My Project
I have students with special needs who need something soft and cute to help them calm down when they get very upset. Yesterday, I gave a cute little blue stuffed bear to a student who was crying. She held it and I think it helped her feel better. Later another student got very angry and had difficulty calming down until she saw the same bear and got to hold it. She borrowed the bear for the rest of the day.
The stuffed cats I'm requesting are for students when they need a break.
Students will be able to look at, touch, squeeze and talk to these furry friends to help them feel better.
Having snacks for students who aren't able to communicate that they are hungry or that they missed breakfast would be wonderful. The coloring books will be great for students who need to create something with color when they can't stop thinking about things that bother them.
The juice and water bottles are for students who need more than just a few sips of water from the drinking fountain at school. The wobble chairs are for students who have difficulty going from the standing to sitting position - we often sit on the floor in the gym. Having all these resources for students with different needs will make a huge difference for the students with special needs who need them.
