I am a speech therapist in a lower elementary school in rural southeast Louisiana. I would like to purchase a book written for children about children with disabilities for every classroom on my campus. I would like to help encourage acceptance for children with different abilities. The book I am requesting is written about Russ, a young boy with Down syndrome, whose everyday life experiences, not his disability are the subject of the book. One of the nice things about this book is that Russ has Down syndrome and the book does not mention it. It just shows Russ as a regular kid, doing regular kid stuff. If it were not for the pictures, we would not even know that Russ has Down syndrome. The story is about Russ going to school, playing with friends and taking responsibility for his mistakes. I feel that this is the way to present disabilities to other children, showing the child engaged and participating in school and community activities just as any other child would do. I would like to purchase a book for each classroom on our campus, including our three "regular" pre-school classes and our two pre-school classes for children with different abilities. The students in this class include children with Down syndrome, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, and developmental delays. The school (population of about 500) where I work has pre-k through second grade and these children will be a part of our campus and a part of our community for their entire lives. Early childhood is the time to introduce acceptance that will hopefully last a lifetime.
