Rural Readers Need Your Help!

Help me give my students multiple titles of books to read and enjoy. Please help me provide my students with the needed manipulatvies to demonstrate math concepts.

My Students

My 4th graders this year are troopers!! They are hard workers and never give up! They love to read all genres of chapter books and discuss the characters and plots. They are also enthusiastic about math! They powered through the steps of long division and have conquered geometry! I am so proud of what they have accomplished so far this year! They bring a smile to my face multiple times in a day!

Our wonderful school is situated in a mountain valley in Utah.

We live in a rural area and our school qualifies as a Title 1 school. Most of our kids come from families who have farms or work in coal mines in our mountains. They are down to earth families who believe in hard work! Our school has limited resources, but we know how to get the most bang for a buck!

Since the COVID outbreak, it has been difficult to provide and maintain enough sanitized, reading materials and math manipulatives for my students. Our classroom environment has had to be altered to accommodate for social distancing. I would love to be able to provide more resources for my students.

My Project

Working in a rural school during the Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging to say the least. Trying to provide my students with enough books for classroom use and books to send home, (and books in quarantine) has stretched my classroom library to its limits!! My students love to read and I want to be able to provide them with titles that they love and spike their interests. I have struggled to provide multiple copies of titles on their reading level. I have great kids who want to read the same book as their friends so that they can discuss and share their thoughts either in person or on our class dojo page. I love to hear their discussions and inferences as they share the book together! My classroom library is small and some copies have seen better days! Their covers are torn and pages are taped into the book in hopes they will last for one more read! I would love to provide my 4th graders with book titles so they can have their own book clubs/literature circles and have awesome discussions!

Being able to teach math concepts in multiple ways is imperative to me!

I feel strongly that students need to have the opportunity to use math manipulatives to demonstrate their grasp of the concept being learned. I want to be able to provide enough manipulatives that my students can show their understanding of the math skill being taught. Fractions are a huge part of the 4th grade curriculum and it would be wonderful to have enough resources that could be used safely, in our classroom.
