Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school my students attend is located in the inner city, it serves students in 7th and 8th grade. The community is lower income, with about 98% of the students qualifying for the free lunch program.
The students at my school are always looking for distractions and challenges, events, and activities that will introduce them to new learning experiences and challenge them at the same time.
The students and their parents decide to enroll at this school because of the small learning community, education, and the security it gives them.
My Project
The project will challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, guidance by a mentor and improved health. The students will be in for a challenge, they will compete in a 24 hour 8 person team relay race. A teacher will assist students in their training and reinforce the lessons of responsibility, discipline, and goal-setting. A teacher/mentor will help the students overcome obstacles, have them gain a can-do attitude, and break down mental walls and barriers. The training and challenge will encourage students to develop physical fitness habits, healthy living and making positive, healthy choices. The challenge will allow the students to feel a sense of belonging to a team, all are welcome, we can all achieve a goal as a team and become winners.
