Living in southern Louisiana, water and wetlands are the basis of much of our livelihood. Coastal restoration and wetlands conservation have been the focus of much of my 5th grade science teaching for the past several years. I also try to integrate these concepts into my math instruction as well as the effects on the land and its people in social studies. Many of my students in this rural, low socio economic public school can't understand how erosion and pollution affect their lives here in Albany, LA. Even for some adults, it's hard to truly get a picture of how water can wear away the land and how even the smallest bit of pollution can affect our ponds, streams, and ground water. A lack of hands on materials in these areas have been a problem for student understanding.
Recently I attended a wetlands workshop and saw the stream table and watershed models in use. I was amazed by these items and they even helped me to further understand the effects of erosion and pollution. How wonderful it would be for my students to experience the hands on use of these wonderful models. Not only could they see water in motion and how run off can affect streams and groundwater, but they would be able to manipulate these items and relate to their own surroundings. These materials could also be put on display at one of our parent nights and could be modeled by students to show parents the same effects that they have come to learn.
I'm certain that these materials, when used with my curriculum guide and text, would give my students and parents an unforgettable understanding of these concepts.
