Students at my school come from a working class neighborhood that is very well integrated. They are every color of the rainbow and come from multiple backgrounds. One thing that they have in common is that many of their families are working multiple jobs and having trouble making ends meet.
Teachers, counselors, and other staff members frequently purchase basic need items for students who are not able to receive them from their families.
This school uses a program of catching students doing the right thing. There is an ongoing conversation about "being a bucket filler" by doing good things. They receive incentive "bucks" for good behavior and deeds.
My Project
My new classroom has tile floors and my students like to work on the floor, therefore we are in need of 5 area rugs to set up around the classroom. I like my students to feel comfortable when they are learning at school. We will have all interactive rugs. In 5th grade we learn about planets therefore one of our rugs will have them on it. We will also be learning about forces and motion hence we will have a race track. On many rainy days we will not be able to go outside and play, so we will need a game board rug. Moving right alone into our traveling rug students will be able to explore the United States in our classroom. We will also be learning about different continents and biomes. Knowing locations will help students visualize what they are learning.
The rugs will also help keep them off the dirty floors when learning and reading around the classroom.
