My students need a new rug to sit on while having whole-group discussions.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our tiled room isn't exactly comfy, and spiders, roaches, and other pests that seem to creep out at night don't make the floor anyone's favorites place to sit. My students need an inviting space where they can all face each other and share their ideas.
My students are from rural south Louisiana.
They enjoy sports, movies, socializing, and building relationships. 99% are low-income, receive a free or reduced lunch, and are African-American. They're also an advanced 5th grade magnet class that is challenged to reach mastery at a faster rate than their peers.
My students need more experience speaking in front of others, sharing their original ideas clearly, speaking with confidence, listening with intent, and participating in productive group conversations. Having a rug for my students to sit on during our text and math talks would help separate the discussion portion of our class into a special time. Something as simple as a carpet will excite my students to participate and help them feel more comfortable engaging.
Donations to help cover our tiled floor will motivate my students to engage deeply with each other.
Productive conversation is a great learning tool, but it's unfortunately one that my students have yet to master. This rug will allow all of us to sit on the same level, make eye contact, and engage in conversations that build and push their understanding.
