Rug Clubs Make Learning Fun!

Help me give my students what they need to feel safe, secure, and supported at school. Having a rug with designated squares will allow my students to focus on learning and working in partnerships and small groups.

My Students

I have twenty-four first graders, several of them with special needs who join us for a portion of our day, and thrive in an environment with structure and routine. My students enjoy coming to school each day, as many struggle with having their basic needs met at home. They feel safe, and secure at school. Many of my students have had a traumatic incident in their life, which can impact their ability to focus on learning at school.

My students enjoy working with friends in partnerships and small groups to share their thinking, teach one another, and support each other.

I want my students to have an environment that is inviting, and contributes to them feeling supported and successful.

My Project

My students will share the rug with their learning partners and a group of four, which we call a rug club. Students will always know where their partner is when it is time to work together, teach each other, and explain their thinking to increase learning.

During our lessons, students are expected to "turn and talk" and work collaboratively with partners and "rug clubs."Sharing our learning makes learning stick, and also makes it more fun when we can talk with friends.

Having a specific spot to sit during each learning time, reduces distractions, conflicts, and promotes positive social interaction, and communication around learning.
