Rubik's Cubes for Learning Coding and As Fidget Devices

Help me give my students Rubik's cubes for learning and as fidget devices.

My Project

Teaching programming to middle schoolers can be challenging because these students need to learn abstract concepts by writing code in a simulated environment. This ends up alienating many students who have difficulties reading, writing, or various language barriers. A solution to overcome this issue would be to introduce students to various coding concepts through a kinesthetic process. By providing a cube to each student in class, I can relate single lines of code to a movement on the cube; functions, which have multiple lines of code can be related to cube algorithms; and loops, which are lines of code that repeat a certain number of times are easy to demonstrate using a cube.

When the cubes are not in use for learning purposes, they can be useful as fidget devices for students.

Since bringing two Rubik's cubes into my classroom, I have seen an improvement in classroom behavior. This could be because students have become overly reliant on using phones to regulate boredom. And as a teacher who does not allow phone use in my class, many students end up finding destructive alternatives in place of phone use. It's incredible how many of my students ask if they can borrow a cube after finishing their assignments and even helped a few students stay focused during lectures.
