Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the end of the school year, I want my students to have experienced the benefits of hard work, and perseverance. Above all else, I want them to see that refusing to give up, asking for help when they are stuck, and maintaining a positive attitude can make all the difference.
My students are primarily Dominican and Puerto Rican, and many of them have only recently come to the U.S.
About half are ELL students, and almost 100% come from low income households. Historically, these students have struggled to pass standardized tests, such as the MCAS.
My Project
The Rubik's Cube Club meets once a week for an hour (or up to 3 hours!), after school. It is made up of some loyal followers who learned to solve the traditional 3 by 3 Cube in a matter of a few months, and can now solve it in under 2 minutes (record time in the club is 1 min. 8 secs). They are itching to work on the challenge of solving the 4 by 4 cube!
Donations for this project will help my students get their hands on the 4 by 4 Cubes!
This project will help them continue exercising their logical thinking, and spatial reasoning skills, outside of the traditional math classroom. For many of them, succeeding in solving the 3 by 3 cube was one of their first experiences with hard work leading to a positive, tangible outcome. Having the 4 by 4 Cubes will give them another such experience!
