My middle school students love hands-on experiences that incorporate critical thinking and exploration. I am a volunteer advise for our school's Rubik's Cube Club. The club is meets once a week during the winter months and is free for any student (900+ students attend our school) to join. Over the months the students learn the algorithms to solve Rubik's cubes and can usually solve a variety of cube types (3x3s, 2x2s, mirror cubes, etc.)
Our school is a public school in North Dakota that serves 900+ students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
More than a third of our students are from low-income households. The Rubik's cube club is free and open to all students, so having more cubes and more puzzles will help students of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
My Project
The puzzles and cubes will be used in a free after-school program that allows middle school students to learn how to solve Rubik's Cubes and other puzzles. We currently have some cubes and puzzles for the students to use, but it would be wonderful to have more cubes and puzzles to allow the kids to do more hands-on exploring.
Working with Rubik's Cubes help students develop spatial skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, self-confidence, and delayed gratification.
The students develop these skills, learn how to solve the cube from memory, and are happy to help other students learn how to solve the cubes.
Students in my homebase class hour are also able to use the Rubik's Cubes and puzzles, so the puzzles and cubes will be used by many students for several years.
