I teach a great bunch of second graders in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Georgia. Our school houses only first and second grades and it is full of energy!
My students are an active group of kids.
The gifted second graders come to my room for mathematics, science and enrichment classes each day. For mathematics and science, we work on our state standards. During our enrichment time, we work on projects to help the students develop and improve their problem-solving skills, critical thinking, research skills, leadership, and creativity. I also teach a science enrichment class to all the second graders in our school. During this time we explore STEM topics and use the tools of a scientist.
My Project
Teaching the concept of push and pull to second graders can be a very vague topic. What exactly is gravity and where is it? I will use the books to introduce the concept of a Rube Goldberg machine to my students as we begin to learn about push and pull. My students will be able to experience push and pull through using Rube Goldberg kits. Kids also love to build with LEGO and a Rube Goldberg type LEGO kit will surely keep their attention and help them understand push and pull. Imagine the learning experiences we can have in our classroom with these Rube Goldberg materials. My students will always remember the time they were able to learn about science with hands-on materials!
