My students need a portable washer, dryer, ironing board, and other essential items to ensure that they are not ostracized or missing school due to a lack of clean clothing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend school in a large urban district in Ohio, where all of the student body receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students walk to school through neighborhoods that are characterized by abandoned buildings and overgrown lots. Yet, our attendance rate remains at a steady 93%, which is a testament to their commitment towards education.
My scholars especially enjoy learning opportunities that allow them to have hands-on experiences and different learning modalities as they provide many pathways toward achievement.
My Project
Students should be able to come to school to receive an education without worrying about clean clothes. Over the years, I have noticed an alarming amount of students coming to school with soiled clothing. Whether it is due to unstable shelter conditions, homelessness, lack of running water, or proper facilities to wash clothes, dirty clothing has a negative effect on students.
A portable washer and dryer at school would have a positive impact on those scholars that are in need because not only is their self-esteem at risk, personal hygiene is at stake as well.
Dirty clothes can harbor microorganisms and wearing clothing with microorganisms on them can lead to a variety of problems. Skin infections, odor smelling bacteria/ fungi can grow, and students often become the target for cruel jokes and social isolation.
Having clean clothes would give those students back their dignity and allow them to focus on achieving academic excellence. This project would also support those in need of simply wanting to be clean, odor and wrinkle free with personal cleaning wipes, deodorant and an ironing board.
This project will make a difference in the lives of my scholars because it will give them the confidence needed to be a part of a very social environment that we call public education.
