My students are being trail-blazers for our school, and being the first to try out a rigorous reading and writing curriculum. We have already made it through the first two units with books provided by the school, and the students and I are amazed at their growth! We can't wait to continue with the curriculum after the holidays but are in need of more books to make that happen.
My students know that reading challenging texts not only makes us better readers but actually helps our brains grow!
So far we have read The Lightning Thief, and Bud, Not Buddy. We are We are hoping to start Flush, by Carl Hiassen, in February so that we can continue what we have started.
Our class is piloting the Engage NY curriculum for language arts in our school. The students have already successfully completed the first two modules with support from our school. I have even recently received news that our principal has recommended this curriculum for consideration to our superintendent. The students are so proud of their growth so far, that we are excited to continue into the next two modules of this unit. Our goal is to become stronger readers and writers! These units are comprehensive units combining informational text, literary text, language, writing, and speaking and listening standards. The units all spiral, constantly reviewing and building on previous standards.
In this unit, students will be studying point of view, plot, and environmental science, while reading fiction and non-fiction texts about ocean preservation.
Students will finish the unit by creating informative brochures about ocean preservation which aligns with their science unit on human-environment interaction. We thank you in advance for your support for two class sets of the book Flush for our project!
