Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We use body percussion techniques in my class to create rhythmic accompaniment and to keep the beat of the music we're singing or listening to. We need hand held instruments to give the accompaniment a different sound. The class is also in need of headphones for our iPad station!

My students range in age from 5-12 years old.

I teach 400 of the finest PreK-5th grade students around. Our school population covers all walks of life from low to middle income families and is ever increasing with children of military families. Students at our school are experienced technology increases in their classrooms with the inclusion of Smart Boards, educational software, and continued use of computer labs as learning tools. Though all this technology is important, it leaves us with no funding for much needed musical instruments.

My Project

My students need rhythm instruments such as tambourine, triangle, and sleigh bells in which they keep the beat and create their own rhythms to accompany familiar tunes! The materials in this project will be used to teach rhythm and beat. Lessons in multicultural music will be more enjoyable with instruments that represent the various cultures. Students will learn about the different sounds of the wooden instruments verses the metal instruments. Students also will benefit from having a set of earphones to use at our iPad station. This is where children have a chance to play music related games, listen to music, and look up educational apps related to core curriculum at our school.

Having the instruments to put in each child's hands will create a positive learning environment in which students will have less "down" time waiting for their turn to use an instrument.

This will cut down on behavioral issues because students will be engaged for longer periods of time!
