Rousing Reactions via Atomic Modeling

My students need hands-on models of atoms to understand their structure, as well as, the difference between chemical and physical changes.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things interesting and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in Earth Science.

I strive to make my curriculum hands-on, challenging and make the learning applicable by making it relevant to the community in which they live.

When we are learning Earth Science concepts that are unique to areas outside of our community, I look for ways to bring the experiences to my students.

My Project

My STEM students need to create hands-on models to help them understand what they cannot see, atoms and molecules. With these atomic models, students will create molecules, pure substances, and compounds. These are the foundations needed to understand more complex ideas. Without this basic understanding, it is difficult to move on to reactions. Every year students struggle to conceptualize physical changes and chemical reactions. With the addition of atomic models in our classroom, students will be able to see the change matter undergoes when a chemical reaction occurs and atoms bond versus a physical change when atoms simply mix and remain the substance.
