This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Roses are red and violets are blue. We love poetry, how about you? They come from a rough and tough Illinois neighborhood with low income families. They attend a school where 96% of students receive free lunch, but they love poetry.
We celebrate poetry in April but it shouldn't start nor end in this month.
My third grade students have become completely spellbound with reading, writing and reciting poems. We chuckle as we read poetry of the irresistible Shel Silverstein and we tremble with excitement as we read the melodic poems of Langston Hughes.
My Project
So that my student may enjoy poetry all year long, I'm appealing to you to consider my proposal for a variety of poetry books. As well as listening to more poetry, we are asking for copies of "Honey I Love and Other Poems," for each student to be able to take home and share with their families. Your consideration just might inspire the next up and coming poet laureate.
Can't you just visualize the boys and girls as they race to the poetry section of our classroom library and ponder over which book of poems they should choose?
I can't wait to see them engaged in group readings as they cherish their very own copy of "Honey I Love and Other Poems." So, won't you help to make this dream a reality? Won't you share a rhyme or two with us?
