Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my role as Student Support Counselor I have learned how important it is for our children to feel supported, not just academically but emotionally as well. When they feel supported and there is a mutual respect and trust in the classroom, the possibilities for what they can achieve are limitless.
Our students are your typical teenagers, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
They are energetic and full of personality, while consistently challenging their environment. I try to create a space for them to feel comfortable challenging the rules and expectations placed on them, and still bring the conversation back around to the importance of them learning from these experiences and persevering.
Many of our students do not have a strong support network at home, and as a result, their ability to trust adults in their day to day lives is a challenge. It is my hope, as an SSC, that students will feel a connection to their school and work to build up this network of adults that love and care for all 900+ students.
My Project
These books will be utilized primarily as summer reading materials for our students. However, very differently than summer reading usually looks, I will be sponsoring a summer reading book club. Students will have the opportunity to engage with this SSC and other students who will read these books over the summer and discuss the characters, the history and the events as we progress through the book together, over a meal, over tea or even by the pool.
During the 2 months of summer vacation, students lose almost 3 months of learning because they are not continuing to be challenged over their break.
Our school librarian has asked staff members to sponsor a book and encourage students to read over the course of the summer. These 2 books which are being sponsored by the Student Support Counseling department, will be read and discussed with the students over the summer to ensure they are continuing their education in the absence of the classroom.
