Apples, blueberries, grapes...what are those? This is what my students say because their vocabulary and background knowledge doesn't consist of healthy fruits.
I am a self-contained Intensive Learning Center (ILC) teacher in a high poverty elementary school.
I have 7 special needs students in grades k-3, who are functioning on a toddler through 1st grade level. My students have disabilities including ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, and Educable Mentally Handicapped.
My Project
My students come from high poverty home situations and eat most of their meals at McDonald's or other fast food restaurants, since it is cheap and easy. FEED USA and I want to teach my students about healthier food options. I plan to do this through hands-on learning centers where they will be able to sort foods into categories, identify various foods, use healthy food items to count, and be exposed to a variety of healthy foods. Through games such as Avalanche fruit stand and the sorting game, my students will be able to sort, count and learn about various types of fruit. Not only can I teach my students what healthy fruit are and what they look like, but through scented stamp pads, they can even learn what they smell like. I am also seeking an organizer to store all of our wonderful healthy food activities.
Providing my students with hands-on learning opportunities will enhance their healthy foods vocabulary as well as expose them to a variety of healthy food options to help them develop a healthier lifestyle.
Please help FEED USA and I make our future leaders healthier and happier.
