My classroom is a mosaic-- We have students from all over the world who are embraced and celebrated as they learn through full immersion classrooms.
"Yikes, 8th Graders?!" That's everyone's first reaction when I tell them the grade level I teach.
But if you walk into my classroom, you will see respectful and genuinely kind students. You will see students working collaboratively on a project. They might be developing their engineering skills by constructing balloon cars, then racing them to demonstrate Newton’s laws, gathering data and using this quantitative data to determine measures of deviation. Incubators were designed to learn about chemical reactions, and water molecules were split to model covalent bonds and diatomic elements. EVERY student is engaged and EVERY student’s effort is applauded.
We are fortunate to have one-to-one access to chrome books for the last two years. It has become a more common component in our curriculum. They are comfortable using the Google applications and various websites. But it is time for us to step it up a notch!
My Project
I am requesting funds to attend a professional development about The Junior Botball Challenge. This robotics curriculum is a great way to get students excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This week-long summer institute will provide me with the tools I need to bring a sustainable program directly to ALL of my students. I will be able to learn the basics of computing and robotics and bring back re-usable kits for my students to use year after year. My students will benefit by learning concepts and skills that are needed for understanding the intelligent, highly-interactive technology of the future. AND have FUN!
This professional development will enable me to provide my students equal access to computer science and engineering by engaging them in complex, strategic problem-solving.
The knowledge that I gain will also help me implement the Next Generation Science Standards. It is only through continued learning that I can provide my students with the proper tools for the future. Thank you for considering supporting my project.
