My students need basic gardening tools to help them create and maintain their pizza garden bed that we will be using to help integrate reading, writing, and math.
If I could describe my fourth graders in three words, I would say: creative, inspiring, and vibrant. We have a wide range of talents and abilities. My students love a good song, a humorous book in ELA, and a competitive game in math.
Students at our school have been learning about Growth Mindset and positive thinking.
We have grasped the idea that everyone is capable of growing in their own way. This positive initiative has altered their outlook on school! As students see their growth and abilities, they become excited and motivated. This "growing" idea can go beyond the classroom walls and into our amazing school garden that has seized the attention of many of my students.
My Project
My students must learn how academics relate to the real-world. Education is advancing and ever-changing. A new initiative that my students were able to part of this year was "Growth Mindset". This idea states that everyone is able to grow and be the best they can be. This idea then can be applied to our school garden and the idea of "growing". Specifically for future students, I would like to provide for them garden-related materials that they will be able to use to "grow" our garden. Each grade level at our school has adopted different beds within the garden. Our fourth grade has adopted the "pizza" garden bed that includes tomatoes and herbs!
Students find enjoyment in getting out of the routine and learning in a hands-on way.
What better way to do that then to incorporate our garden! I want to be able to jump into this unit of "Rooting for Change" at the beginning of next school year. We can use our garden beds to help us learn specific concepts-like elapsed time, character traits, writing from the viewpoint of a seed. In order to accomplish this, we must have the right garden tools. For example, the gloves will help protect our hands as we work. The small shovels will allow us to work swiftly in planting seeds and plants. The tomato cage will allow the tomatoes we will be growing to stand strong. The books requested will be great resources as well!
Our school garden has provided us with many learning opportunities and I am excited about this new "Rooting for Change" unit. Integrating all of these ideas will allow students to be hands-on and creative in their learning. I believe our students will benefit greatly from the materials in order to maintain and GROW our garden!
