Our third graders at our school love hands-on experiences, and getting lost in an imaginary world through a read aloud. We have the privilege of working with a group of third graders who come in every day eager to learn something new. These students are always wanting to learn more, and look forward to the teacher performance while books are being read aloud to them!
Students learn best through exploration, and we want to make sure we do our best to provide our students with every opportunity to grow their love for reading!
We are always trying to think of ways to get our students excited about reading. Our school is located in a rural community in western North Carolina. The poverty rate at our school is high, and a large percentage of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
Third Grade is a huge transition year for students. We take prior knowledge from previous grades of learning to read, and use it to now, read to learn. We are in need a solid reading curriculum that will allow kids to fall in love with reading. We have finally found that curriculum - Rooted in Reading by Amy Lemons and Hope King. Now, all we need are the read aloud books to go with the curriculum.
With these books, every third grade student at our school will be impacted.
This project will not only benefit one classroom, it will benefit five. There are five third grade teachers at our school. This project will allow each third grade teacher to have a complete set of all mentor texts necessary for the new curriculum for every month of the school year. This will allow all third grade classes to stay on pace with on another. If all classes are reading the same books, this will encourage students from different classes to discuss and share their ideas. Ultimately creating a culture in our grade level that gets students excited about reading!
These books cover all different genres. They will provide the students with fun engaging mentor texts that will guide them through learning different genres, reading strategies, and text structures. With these books, our third grade students will be able to read a variety of books that will help them to grow stronger in reading. As they grow stronger in reading, they will be able to dive deeper into reading to learn!
