Help me give my students the flexibility to write and read in comfortable seating. The stand up desk allows someone to move while working, the kneeling chair is a favorite for kids, and they love twisting on stools!
As a literacy coach, my goal is to provide support to teachers in their roles as teachers of reading and writing. But as an educator, my goal is to spark a love of reading and writing in students.
We spend a great deal of time as educators asking kids to write particular genres, but kids need time to write what's in their hearts.
I believe that choice is incredibly important and allows students to try different styles. I provide feedback for the students, a safe place to share, and activities to generate ideas.
This past year, I worked in a 4th and 5th grade building and was inspired to form a writing club for students once a week during their lunch and recess. I offered it to boys first and was thrilled when 18 boys signed up for the writing club. We met once a week, and they had a chance to collaborate, write, and to be creative. The second session with the girls was just as successful and I am looking forward to continuing with this writing club!
My Project
The 4th and 5th grade students join me during their lunch and recess to collaborate with fellow writers and to share ideas. By allowing kids to be flexible with their seating choices, they are more comfortable and able to get into the writing zone more quickly.
I believe that stand up desks, kneeling chairs, and stools are healthier options for all learners.
Adults want healthy options while working, and kids are no different. It is not comfortable to sit in a hard chair all day, but most schools are still using them.
When kids choose to spend 50 minutes of their school day writing with me, I want to provide them with alternatives to traditional chairs. Please help me create a space for writers in my classroom. The books and sharpies are for inspiration!
