My students need 60 copies of Wonder by R.J. Palacio to improve reading comprehension and use for a reader's companion book they will create in writer's workshop.
“MR. BROWNE'S SEPTEMBER PRECEPT:
WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEING RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND.”
- R.J. Palacio, Wonder
"Know this child will be gifted; with love, with patience and with faith; she'll make her way." - Natalie Merchant, Wonder
Middle school should be one of the wonders of the world.
When adults look back on it, they often question how they survived! My 7th graders are kind souls who need the opportunity to be kind to others. We spend time discussing ways to give back and while students are reaching out to help those in their community, sometimes inside the classroom, we miss the chance to be kind to one another.
My Project
Wonder by R.J. Palacio is about a boy with a tremendous spirit and intellect and a severe facial deformity. It is his first year in a traditional school setting. He and his classmates face challenges as they navigate middle school and each other. The book will be used to engage in conversations about being kind to one another. We will practice modeling the close reading strategies we have been developing the first quarter of school. Second semester, these students will write reader companion books in their writer's workshop course, and this title will give them another option from which to choose, in addition to existing titles in the 7th grade curriculum.
It takes time to build a community of learners in a classroom.
Students want and need to feel safe. The subject matter in Wonder will allow our class to have those tough conversations about who we are and further develop the sense of community we need to thrive as learners. This title empowers students to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate the "Wonder" of others!
