My students need a rug, book organizers , and bean bag chairs to make a library area in our classroom. I believe all students should have a comfortable library/rug area.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have been down an extremely rocky road. In October, they had to deal with losing their teacher to another job. So from October to January, they had several substitutes teachers. They had no structure or classroom management for months. On top of that, they were not being taught.
In January, I was placed with 11 vibrant 4th and 5th grade students in a "severe" learning and language disabilities class in Newark, NJ, a high poverty city.
Their classification range from cognitively impaired to autism. Even though they are labeled as "severe", they have been busy bees trying to make up what they have lost. They are making steady progress in this short period of time. I could tell by their smiling faces that they are happy to have a permanent teacher and a structured learning. environment.
My Project
I asked my students "What would make our classroom a better place?" The students had several suggestions, but came to the agreement that our class was missing a library and rug area. Even though we have plenty books, they are not organized or inviting to the students. I believe all students, no matter what grade, should have rug area in the class. It can be a place to have morning message, group instruction, group discussion, small groups, peer to peer tutoring, independent reading, and much more. The selected items would be used to enhance what we already have. This contribution would improve our learning environment tremendously.
Even though there are other stations in our class that need renovations, my students thought that having an inviting library/rug area should be our first priority.
The students have started to sort our library books according to genre. One students has brought in a hanging plant and another, stuff animals. I could already imagine their faces when this area is complete...:D!
